Valentine L. Spawr Furlough Form

We have a clue as to what the "most serious" family situation was. According to Valentine's diary, his wife, Irena, was living in Hudson at the time. On Aug. 29 he had received a letter from her saying their youngest child was sick and  "the babe she fears will not get well." His diary mentions four children, and only three appeared in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. The last entry in his diary was Sept. 15. As you can see, this form was completed the following day.
